British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
